Pros and Cons of Cultural Imperialism
There are reasons why a country may want to promote their style of life. The country gets lots of money from having brands all over the world. As an example, Americans get more money when people abroad buy their brands. The second benefit is political. Countries with a lot of influence can affect smaller countries. An example is the American embargo on Cuba. America does not agree with the politics of Cuba, and by restricting the trade they can punish the Cuban government. Another benefit for the home country is recognition all around the world and power.
The cons of imperialism could be, that people do not support the local economy when they work for foreign countries. The second reason is the destruction of the local culture. There is always a risk, that community can forget their own culture. From the perspective of another country, the political control is bad, because the government can create policies that do not benefit local people but benefits others.
In the specific example, with America, the benefits for this country are the recognition, power and income from the brands. However, there are some cons such as other countries might see the US as domineering. Because the US has so much influence and it is not clear if this influence is used for good or selfish reasons, we will look at some examples and try to decide.
